Recipe: Apple Dumplings

It’s Sunday, and that means it’s time for another dessert recipe. Oh, favorite day of the week, we’re happy to see you.

This recipe is not what I would necessarily describe as “easy”. The steps are simple enough, but there’s a fair amount of prep. So let’s call it easy, but step-full. Oh, and did I mention it’s WORTH IT? Seriously, I know I say all my recipes are awesome, (and really, would I share them if they tasted gross?), but this one REALLY is. Really really.

The apples will melt in your mouth, and are reminiscent of apple pie with a crispy crust. Absolutely amazing. Get out the vanilla ice cream, too, because you’ll want this a la mode.

Apple Dumplings

Recipe originally from the Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ¼ cups sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1/3 to ½ cup half and half
  • honey
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 small apples
  • 1 tbsp butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F).
  2. For sauce: combine water, 1 ¼ cups sugar, and ½ tsp cinnamon. Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in ¼ cup butter. Set aside.
  3. For pastry: combine flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening until pieces are pea-sized. Sprinkle 1 tbsp of half and half over part of the mixture, gently toss with a fork, repeat until all dough is moistened, 1 tbsp of half and half at a time. Form dough into a ball, roll into a rectangle- dough should be thin. Cut into six 6-inch squares.
  4. Peel and core apples.
  5. Place an apple on each pastry square. Drop ½ to full tbsp of honey into the center of each apple. Dot top of apple with butter.
  6. Moisten edges of pastries with water, gather the four corners to the center of the apple and pinch to seal.
  7. Place dumplings into a 13x9x2 baking pan.
  8. Reheat sauce to boiling, pour over dumplings.
  9. Bake uncovered for about 1 hour or until dumplings are tender and pastry is golden.
  10. Spoon remaining sauce over dumplings.
  11. Serve.

    This looks so good! Warm apples and ice cream?! I’m there. Great picture too!!

      Seriously- it’s amazing. (I use the word amazing too often, I know, but it’s SO appropriate!)
